Asana tip sheet #23 – Agni Stambhasana (fire log pose)

August 14, 2024 By Tania Ingrahm Leave a Comment

Tania in agnistambhasana (fire log pose)

I love the name of this pose. Agni stambhasana means fire log pose and I can completely imagine the stacking of logs on the fire as I take this pose.

This is a wonderful hip stretch that’s good for just about everyone. Our version is modified for yogins that may be a bit tighter and not able to do the deeper version of stacking the feet directly on top of their opposite knee. By lifting up on a zafu or firm cushion you’ll be able to extend the spine and begin to tilt the pelvis forward.

I also like the name for play on the word FIRE since it can also be pretty intense, even fiery! As you work deeply into tight hips, you’ll surely feel the heat building.

It’s important to breathe deeply and slowly into the intensity and allow the body to open gradually. Go gently in this one!

The result of practicing this stretch daily pays off with hips and low back that are open and pain free.

Below are some additional details about this asana…as usual, download the pdf of this tip sheet at the bottom of this post.

asana name = agni stambhasana

  • agni = fire
  • stambha = pillar, column
  • asana = seat

benefits

  • Opener for hips, low back and groin.
  • Encourages deep relaxed breathing as you move into this stretch.
  • Relieves stress and tension in body and mind.
  • Great post-exercise or post-work stretch!

contraindications

  • Knee or hip injury

modifications

  • Sit on firm cushion.
  • Do one side at a time while seated in a chair.
  • Stay upright, instead of folding forward. Relax face and breathe deeply. Ahhhhh.
  • If knees are uncomfortable, try flexing feet and extending into ball of foot.

attitude

  • mindful concentration on deep sensation

Conclusion

Agni Stambhasana is one of those workhorse poses that’s not really showy but gets a lot of work done in a short amount of time.

It’s super important to work with your body gradually, coaxing the hips to melt open; not forcing the knees down.

Be mindful of any discomfort in the pose, a warning sign to move even slower.
